OPT: Chak De India

Went to PVR on Oct3, for the 10PM show. As usual, everything got delayed, and we started for PVR at 9.50PM (the blame, unanimously comes to me). Reached by 10.10PM after a game of 'roadrash', and got the tickets. 130 Rs per ticket. It was the row 'J'. A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-I-J... Is it the frontmost row in the theatre? Would we be blessed with a 'golden opportunity' to watch the movie 'first' (compared to the folks sitting behind us, who have shelled out the same amount of bucks for the movie?!). Well No. J was behind, and was a cozy seat. The front row had 2 galz and a guy. Our row had 2 couples sandwiching us from both sides. And we were 4 of us - Rat, Gas, Bin and Sow.

It was a good 2+ hrs of entertainment. Emotions were rightly packed. Songs were just at the right moment. And the movie was full of Josh. There were a remark or two (funny ones) on cricket. The game was mixed in right proportions with the rest of the movie. And SRK rocked! As always..

Preethi Sabrwal reminded me very much of Katrina Kaif. The other characters too left a lasting (even if its for short duration) impression onto the audience.

The 2 gals sitting in the front row were there as if they were watching a live match on ESPN. A good pass, a converted penalty corner, or a straight goal, and the duo would jump up and down clapping. The senior couple, sitting to our left too were on the higher end of josh-meter. The slightly side-ways grown madam had eatables in one hand, but managed to clap on her lap, at appropriate time slots..

The dicole "Ek Baat Kaan Kholkar Sunlo.. Tum sab khelte ho, to pehle apne mulk keliye, phir apne team keliye; aur agar thoda sa bhi jaan bachi hai, to...apne liye" was memorable.

There was one "not-so-okay" situation in the movie. Agreed, the women's hockey team is not given any due weightage. But to believe that the hockey federation would give the cap of the coach to a "so-called-traitor" is slightly on the fictional side. The media, that once tore him down into pieces kept quiet ? And the federation fellows, are they dumb, deaf and blind to give this offer to Kabir Khan ?

As is said "all characters and events depicted in this film are fictional", you ought to believe that, this fiction is also fictional.

All said and done, I still dont know the exact meaning of 'chak de'. When the movie "Hum Tum" hit the screens, the song 'Chak de Chak de Chak de... Chak de saare gum' was doing rounds all over. I tend to tell myself "Chak de" means "forget"

But Chak De India...
Forget India ?
Nayyyyyyyyyyyy

Tail:
1. To find the meaning of 'chak de', I have to seek the help of my friend sitting in the first floor. Thats one task for tomorrow.

Here is the meaning of Chak De:

"Meaning of "Chak De" is Uttah De
Chakna means Uthana
de means Dena
It is oftenly used when calling "Chak De Fatte"
Which means "Duniya ko Utha do Means "Chha Jao"
Its a slang in Punjabi. The word used to encourage others to keep the pace or to perform better...."

I don't knwo how correct it is..But I guess, its quite close, actually there is some story related to sikh's behind usage of this phrase, read somewhere, but now, don't remember it ;)

hope, this little gyaan session was enlightening ;)

@anony -> Thanks for enlightening. Yeah, have heard 'chak de fatte' multiple times. Good that the 'mystery' is finally solved. And good to see the solution coming from a colleague ;-)
If you get the sikh story behind the evolution of 'chak de', pls send it to me. For a change, I'm into a research mood :-P

As you are in research mood, let me help you a bit...Here goes the story:

"Chak De Phatte -though loosely translated as pick up the floorboards is more of a war cry than a housekeeping call. The origins of the phrase lie in the times when the Khalsa i.e. the original warrior Sikhs were formed, they would cross canals and attack Mughal camps in a blitzkrieg attack and then just as they came would retreat leaving the enemy helpless. The sport of tent pegging also evolved from this camp raiding where the riders would remove the pegs of the tents trapping the occupants under, what then used to b a very heavy fabric. While escaping back to their base the Khalsa warriors would dismantle any temporary bridges constructed by them (made out of "Phatte") to prevent the Mughals from chasing them and sometimes to prevent the enemy from escaping, hence the cry "Chak De Phatte". The phrase then acquired the meaning: to complete the route. And is now used as in the figure of "Bring the house down!". "

Well I was abt to comment on the meaning of chak de, when i read the already posted comments.. What 'anonymous' posted is more or less correct. I heard a slightly different version from a Punjabi. He said
"The origin of the phrase is 'Chak de Phatte' meaning lift the wood. And wood here refers to the plough. So in difficult times it was used as for encouraging people to do hard work in the field and enjoy the benefits. Hence the meaning of Chak De."

As for the movie, Chak De is too good to miss. One should watch the movie even if he hates Shahrukh.. Shahrukh has little role in the movie. The kamaal is done by the gals..

VG, I thought the research part could be closed, but you have pushed open new doors! Very interesting!

Yep, the movie is a must-watch. And to be watched in a screen.
Recently I happened to watch Lakshya on TV, thanks to Zoom. The dicole "first for nation, then for army, then for your friend, and then for oneself" seems to be the inspiration note for the similar dicole in Chak De India :-P
